Korea has four seasons but because of global warming it appears that spring and autumn are getting shorter, and sometimes you will have extremely hot weather in summer time and extremely cold weather in winter.

Spring (Late March ~ May)

During spring the average temperature is around 8~25C. The weather is generally warm and dry. One thing to watch out for during this season is the revival of the flowers after the cold winter. Camellias, azaleas and other plants and trees flower. The most beautiful and stunning thing during the spring season though, is the flowering of the cherry blossom trees across the country during April. During this period you will see many Cherry blossom festivals in Korea. However there is also some bad weather during this time, with strong winds carrying what is called the “yellow Sand dust” from China. As well as this the temperature will sometimes drop down low enough for it to still get fairly chilly on occasion.

Things to Do:
Attend festivals such as the cherry blossom festival, Mud festival, and Flower festival; go hiking in the mountains, or visit a nature park or Amusement park etc.

Summer (June ~ Early September)

During this period the average Temperature is around 31~37C and It is generally very hot and humid. Therefore you need to make sure that your accommodation has Air-conditioning. We also have a monsoon season from late June until the end of July during which sometimes a typhoon will occur. One thing to watch out for in summer and the early fall is the mosquitoes and other insect life that thrive during this time.

Things to Do:

Visit some of the beaches, watch a baseball game (summer in Korea is baseball season), watch water sports on the river or go camping in the mountains etc.

Autumn (September ~ November)

During autumn the average temperature is usually less than 10 Degrees Celsius. The days are also getting shorter and the weather progressively gets colder. However despite this the fall is in many ways Koreas most beautiful season. The air is crisp and the sky is crystal clear and a beautiful blue color. As well as this you will see the leaves change their colors into red and yellow with the mountains coming ablaze with stunning fall colors.

Things to Do: Participate in outdoor sports, attend the Pusan international movie festival etc.
Winter (December ~ Mid March)

In Korea the winter is very cold, and while we don’t generally get a lot of snow in Seoul, certain parts of Korea such as Kangwondo and Jeolado, do at times sustain damage from heavy snow falls.

The temperature can at times drop down to around – 10C, and one should also consider the fact that it is sometimes quiet windy, and hence you will need to take into account the wind chill factor.

Things to Do: Go skiing, ice skating, visit one of the hot springs, go winter hiking etc.

* Please check out “useful link “in order to find out more about activities and festivals in South Korea. There are generally lots of things to do and places to visit for western teachers that are less well known about and hence often not explored, please adventure out and enjoy them while you are in Korea.
